Karen Detamore, Executive Director of the Friends of Farmworkers from 1989 to 2009, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at her home in West Philadelphia. Karen Detamore tirelessly dedicated much of her professional life to improving the living and working conditions of farm workers and mushroom workers. Karen was a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Board of Governors and has previously co-chaired the Committee on the Legal Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
She was recognized by many for her important contributions.
Karen was honored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association with the Everyday Leader Award in 2006.
In 2009 she was awarded the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network's Excellence Award.
A scholarship fund for a summer law student has been established by the Philadelphia Bar Foundation in Karen's honor. Those wishing to donate to the fund can simply make a donation to the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, indicating that the money is intended for the Karen Detamore Memorial Scholarship.
